How to Block a Stolen Mobile Phone with CEIR and IMEI: Ultimate Guide

Blocking a stolen mobile phone using IMEI and CEIR prevents the device from being used on any Indian telecom network, protecting your personal data and preventing fraudulent use. Acting within the first 24 hours significantly increases the chance of recovery and limits the damage from unauthorised access to your accounts.

What Is CEIR and How Does It Help?

CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) is a centralised government database managed by DoT (Department of Telecommunications) that stores IMEI numbers of all mobile devices registered in India. When a stolen phone’s IMEI is reported and blocked via CEIR, the device becomes unusable on all Indian telecom networks simultaneously — regardless of whether the SIM card is changed.

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit number assigned to every mobile phone. You can find your device’s IMEI by dialling *#06# on any phone, or by checking the box the phone came in.

How to Block a Stolen Phone Using CEIR?

Step 1: File a Police Report

Report the theft immediately at your nearest police station or file an online FIR at your state police portal. Obtain a copy of the FIR, as you will need it for the CEIR submission. Include the IMEI number, phone make and model, date and location of theft, and your contact details.

Step 2: Get a Duplicate SIM

Visit your telecom provider and obtain a duplicate SIM for your lost number. CEIR will send OTPs for verification to this number, so you need an active SIM with the same number before submitting the request.

Step 3: Submit the Request on CEIR

Visit the CEIR portal at ceir.gov.in and click “Block Stolen/Lost Mobile”. Fill in the device information (IMEI, model, colour), lost/stolen information (date, location, police station details), and your personal information (name, address, contact). Click Submit. You will receive a request ID for tracking.

The device will be blocked within 24 hours across all Indian networks.

Step 4: Track Your Request

Use the request ID on the CEIR portal to track the status of the blocking request. Once confirmed as blocked, the phone cannot be used on any network in India, even if the thief changes the SIM card.

How to Contact Your Service Provider to Block the Phone?

Call your telecom provider’s customer care immediately after the theft. Provide the IMEI number and request them to blacklist the device. This is a separate step from CEIR and is advisable to do simultaneously, as providers can block usage on their specific network faster than waiting for CEIR processing.

Can You Track a Stolen Phone with the IMEI Number?

The IMEI number alone does not transmit location data. However, if you had enabled Find My Device (Android) or Find My iPhone (iOS) before the theft, you can use these services to track the approximate location, lock the device remotely, or perform a remote wipe to delete all personal data. The block IMEI guide covers the technical process in detail.

What Should You Do Immediately After Your Phone Is Stolen?

  • Call your telecom provider to block the SIM immediately
  • Change passwords for all accounts accessible from the phone (email, banking, social media)
  • Enable remote wipe via Find My Device / Find My iPhone if available
  • Report to police and obtain FIR
  • Submit CEIR blocking request with the IMEI number
  • Notify your bank to monitor for unauthorised transactions
