Computer hacking is the unauthorised access to a device, network, or account by exploiting vulnerabilities in software, weak passwords, or human error. Hackers steal personal and financial data, install malware, and can cause significant financial and reputational damage to individuals and businesses. The good news is that a few consistent practices dramatically reduce your risk.

What Is Computer Hacking?

Hacking means gaining unauthorised access to a computer, network, or online account without the owner’s permission. Hackers may target you directly or gain access through a third-party service that holds your data. Common motives include stealing payment credentials, installing ransomware, gaining access to corporate networks via compromised employee devices, or harvesting data to sell on the dark web. Understanding how hackers gain entry is the first step to blocking them.

How Do Hackers Target Your Computer?

Method 1: Spyware and Keyloggers

Hackers install spyware on your device by tricking you into opening malicious email attachments, clicking unsafe links, or downloading infected software. Once installed, spyware monitors your keystrokes, takes screenshots, and silently transmits your passwords, bank account details, and personal information to the attacker. Signs of infection include unexpected slowdowns, unfamiliar pop-up ads, and programs you did not install.

Method 2: Exploiting Unpatched Software

Every unpatched vulnerability in your operating system or browser is an open door for hackers. Criminals actively scan networks for devices running outdated software with known security flaws, then use automated tools to exploit them remotely without any action from you.

Method 3: Weak or Reused Passwords

Password attacks — brute force, dictionary, and credential stuffing — are extremely effective against short or reused passwords. A single compromised password from one data breach can expose dozens of accounts that share the same credentials. Read our guide on password attack methods and preventions.

Method 4: Phishing Emails and Fake Websites

Phishing attacks trick users into voluntarily entering credentials on fake login pages or downloading malware disguised as legitimate files. They are the most common entry point for hacking attacks against both individuals and organisations.

How to Protect Against Computer Hacking?

1. Keep All Software Updated

Enable automatic updates for your operating system (Windows Update, macOS Software Update, Android/iOS auto-updates), your web browser, and all applications. Critical security patches close the vulnerabilities that hackers exploit most frequently. Never ignore or delay update notifications.

2. Install Reputable Antivirus and Antispyware Software

A quality security suite provides real-time protection against viruses, ransomware, spyware, and phishing pages. Configure it to scan automatically on a daily schedule and run a full system scan at least twice monthly. Ensure anti-spyware definitions are updated so they can detect the latest threats.

3. Use a Firewall

A firewall monitors and controls the network traffic entering and leaving your device. Enable the built-in Windows Firewall or macOS firewall, and consider a hardware firewall for home routers to prevent unauthorised inbound connections.

4. Use Strong, Unique Passwords and a Password Manager

Every account needs a unique password of at least 12 characters combining uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters. Never reuse passwords. Use a password manager to generate and store credentials securely. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all critical accounts.

5. Be Cautious with Email Attachments and Links

Never open attachments or click links in emails from unknown senders. Even emails from known contacts can be spoofed. If an attachment or link is unexpected, verify with the sender via phone before opening. See our guide on how to stop unsolicited emails.

6. Avoid Using Public Wi-Fi Without a VPN

Public Wi-Fi networks are frequently unsecured. Attackers on the same network can intercept your unencrypted traffic using man-in-the-middle attacks. Use a VPN to encrypt your connection whenever you work on public networks.

7. Regularly Back Up Your Data

Maintain off-site, encrypted backups of all critical data. In the event of a ransomware attack or device theft, a reliable backup allows you to restore your data without paying criminals or losing important files.
