Locking your Aadhaar biometric data prevents anyone from using your fingerprint or iris scan. No one can use it to authenticate a transaction or access services without your permission. Fortunately, UIDAI provides a free online facility to lock and unlock Aadhaar biometric data in minutes — protecting you from OTP fraud and identity misuse linked to biometric authentication.

Why Should You Lock Your Aadhaar Biometric Data?

Specifically, Aadhaar biometric data — fingerprints and iris scans — authenticates transactions at banks, government offices, and Aadhaar-enabled Payment System (AePS) terminals. Fraudsters who gain access to your biometric data can impersonate you to withdraw money from your bank account, transfer property, or fraudulently claim government benefits in your name.

Indeed, reports of AePS fraud have emerged across India where criminals used cloned fingerprints to drain victims’ bank accounts. Locking your biometric data entirely disables biometric authentication for your Aadhaar number — making such fraud impossible even if your fingerprint data is somehow compromised.

  4. Click Send OTP. A one-time password will be sent to your registered mobile number.
  5. Enter the OTP and click Submit.
  6. Select Enable Biometric Lock and confirm. You will receive an SMS confirmation that your biometrics are now locked.

Once locked, the system will reject any biometric authentication attempt using your Aadhaar until you unlock it.

Method 2: Via the mAadhaar Mobile App

  1. First, download the mAadhaar app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store (official UIDAI app).
  2. Set up your profile by entering your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your registered mobile.

  4. Toggle the lock on. Confirm with your mPIN or the OTP.

Moreover, the mAadhaar app is the fastest method for both locking and unlocking, as it does not require visiting a website.

Additionally, if you do not have internet access, you can still lock or unlock your Aadhaar biometrics via SMS from your registered mobile number to 1947:

  • To request an OTP: Send GETOTP to 1947.
  • To lock biometrics: Send LOCKUID <last 6 digits of Aadhaar> <OTP> to 1947.
  • To unlock biometrics: Send UNLOCKUID <last 6 digits of Aadhaar> <OTP> to 1947.

You will receive an SMS confirmation for each action. Keep your registered mobile number active — without it, you cannot receive the OTP required to lock or unlock biometrics.

How to Unlock Aadhaar Biometric Data?

Conversely, unlocking your biometric data follows the same process as locking. Visit uidai.gov.in → My Aadhaar → Aadhaar Services → Lock & Unlock Biometrics, enter your Aadhaar number, receive and enter the OTP, and select Disable Biometric Lock. Your biometrics will be active again immediately and you can use them for authentication at any AePS terminal or bank.

Important: Only unlock your biometrics temporarily when you need to use them for authentication (e.g., at a bank branch or government office) and re-lock them afterwards. This minimises the window of vulnerability.

What Is the Difference Between Aadhaar Number Lock and Biometric Lock?

Specifically, UIDAI offers two separate lock features that are often confused:

  • First, Aadhaar Number Lock — Locks the 12-digit Aadhaar number itself and generates a Virtual ID (VID) for use in its place. Once locked, no one can use your Aadhaar number for authentication; they must use the VID.
  • Second, Biometric Lock — Specifically disables biometric (fingerprint and iris) authentication for your Aadhaar while leaving OTP-based authentication active.

For maximum security, lock both your Aadhaar number (use VID for transactions) and your biometric data.

What to Do If Your Aadhaar Biometrics Are Misused?

If you suspect someone has already used your Aadhaar biometric data for fraud:

  • First, lock your biometrics immediately using the steps above.
  • Then, check your Aadhaar authentication history at uidai.gov.in to see all recent authentication attempts on your number.
  • Also, file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in or call Cyber Crime Helpline 1930.
  • Furthermore, report to UIDAI directly at 1947 or by email at help@uidai.gov.in.
